2010 Caddis Fly Swap

Brown and Bright Green Deep Pupa

Recipe - page 40 Gary LaFontaine's Caddisflies

Hook:          #14 Mustad 94840 ( dry fly hook) I used Dai Riki #730
Weight:        Lead wire
Underbody:   1/3 olive sparkle yarn & 2/3 bright green acrylic craft fur
mixed ( I used bright geen sparkle yarn)
Overbody:     Medium olive sparkle yarn - 2 strands as a sheath over
underbody
Hackle:        Dark grouse fibers along the lower half of the sides
Head:          Brown marabou strands spun and wrapped as a rope or
brown fur
The body length to head length ratio is approximately  4/5 hook length to 1/5 hook length

In anticipation of a hatch of green caddis this pupa can be fished up and across dead drift with a strike indicator.( or without the indicator) You can alternate dead drift with swinging to mimic the pupa rising then sinking. This is what the naturals do prior to hatching. You can also dead drift this fly above fish seen feeding on the deep pupa and then stop the drift near their feeding lane to allow the fly to swing up and across in front of the fish.(Leisering Lift) La Fontaine mentions other methods for fishing the pupa that I haven't tried. This fly in an unweighted version and with a deer hair wing instead of legs is an effective emerger fished in the film to showing fish. I have always fished this fly with a floating line, although a sinktip line might be used to fish the deep pupa.
