What makes a river a "tailwater"?
The influence of a reservoir on a river
Darrell Bowman
Trout Management Supervisor
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission
This presentation will explain how reservoirs alter downstream rivers in obvious and not so obvious ways. As the upstream beginning boundaries of the watershed adopted by the Friends of the North Fork and White Rivers, Norfork and Bull Shoals Reservoirs have tremendous influence on the rivers and the associated watershed for miles downstream. With my AGFC hat removed and without too much scientific terminology, I hope to explain what causes 'low dissolved oxygen"; how diminished and altered flows affect the downstream river channel; how tributary streams are affected, and how disturbance in tributary watersheds can affect the tailwater trout fishery. Reservoir characteristics and management influence all these things. This will not be a talk specifically about management, trout, minimum flow, etc., but rather a scientific overview of why these things have to be dealt with in a reservoir / tailwater relationship.
