FLYTYING CLASS SEPTEMBER 24-OCTOBER 22
Here is an opportunity for NAFF members to learn and perfect some new fly tying skills. this 5 week course will sight in on subsurface flies only and will explore streamers, wet flies, soft hackles and nymphs. Although some background tying skills are helpful don't be daunted by the flies in this class. The students will focus on perfecting skills, building more durable flies and investigate patterns that are not only effective on local waters but will also enhance the learning process. Join master tyers Dean Darling and Dennis Galyardt for 5 Monday evenings, 6-8 pm, at the Vetran's Administration Office, 5th and Church, Mt. Home. Class members should provide their own vise, tools (including a dubbing twister and dubbing brush), head cement and proper eye wear. All other materials will be provided by the NAFF. To register for the tying class call Dennis at 417 284 3320 or Dean at 870445 2440. You may also sign up at the Club Picnic. Class size is limited to 10 so don't delay.
Intermediate Fly Tying Class - Starting Jan 8, 2007
"What fly are you using?" This is a common question as friendly anglers meet on the stream. The answer may be as varied as the fishermen, the river, or even the year. "I've taken six on the Rio Grande King." "I've caught two on the Professor, one a nice brown." Where was this? WHEN was this? Those are old attractor wet flies. Do they still work today?
If you are interested in trying some flies that are new to you (and to the fish), then you might consider tying a few at the next intermediate fly tying class. Dennis Galyardt will be the instructor, with assistance from Dean Darling. Prerequisite for the class is Beginning Fly Tying or equivalent experience. Last year the class filled early and not everyone had a chance to participate. This season's class will have all new patterns including: classic wet flies, the Muddler Minnow, Czech nymph, caddis pupa, parachute Adams, and other unique flies.
The class will meet on Monday evenings, beginning January 8, 2007 at the County Offices Building, on 5th and Church, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This is a five week course which is free to members of the NAFF. Student should bring the vise, tools, assorted threads (3/0, 6/0, 8/0), Zap-a-Gap glue and their imagination. The NAFF will furnish the rest. Call Dennis at 417-284-3320 or Dean at 870-445-2440 to register.
We have scheduled a five-week Beginner Fly Fishing School for the month of May. Each Tuesday evening in May (5/6, 5/13, 5/ 20 and 5/27), from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, we will conduct a seminar series designed to start you off on the right foot in fly fishing. The series will conclude with an on-river, guided outing on Saturday, May 30, from 8:00 AM to Noon, whereby the students will have a chance to fish for the morning with an experienced Club member. At noon we will have a Club Outing/Picnic for all in the club to enjoy. After that; open fishing with whomever and wherever you wish. This school will be free to all NAFF members. Those non-members wishing to participate can join the club at the first night of class. The Tuesday evening classes will be held at the Van Matre Senior Center in Mountain Home (same location as the regular club meetings). We're targeting either Rim Shoals or the North Fork River as the venue for the Saturday outing, but we'll finalize that location as we get closer to the date. Please see the February edition of "Tale Waters" for the course outline.
As an encore, we will conduct a Fly Casting Clinic for any and everyone. The clinic is designed to accommodate casters of all levels-from beginner to advanced. The date is July 19, 2008 at Big Spring Park, in Cotter. This class will be broken into casting-level groups so that you don't have to worry about being in over your head or ahead of the rest of the class.
For those just getting started we cover the "Five Essentials" of Fly Casting, Forming Loops, Pick-up/Lay-down, the Back Cast, the Roll Cast, shooting line and anything else that we have time for. For the more advanced caster we'll get into hauling, double hauling, distance casting, specialty casts such as the Reach Cast, Pile Cast, Off-shoulder Casts and more. We will also help you "Tune-Up your cast to make even better than it is now. Don't miss this one. It's also free to NAFF members and anyone can join the club at the clinic.
As a means of recruiting volunteers to help teach the Casting Clinic, we're holding a "Train the Trainer session on Tuesday, May 6, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The location will be announced on the website, at the Sow Bug Roundup, and in this newsletter.
If you are interested in helping out as a casting coach, or to sign up for either of the classes/clinics, please call me (Denis Dunderdale) as soon as possible at (870) 405-9678 (Cell), or (870) 435-2355 (Home), or email me at dryfly@infodash.com <mailto:dryfly@infodash.com>.
