Fly of the Month - June 2010
Paul's Ginger Booger
We all probably have things that we rely on for one thing or another. Most of us have a "go to" fly and mine has been a small woolly bugger tied for my 4 weight rod that I fish a lot on Norfork. A number 14 hook, TMC 5262 or equivalent with a bead head. If you use brass, the first time it hits the water it may float like a Crackleback, but I've caught several fish that way. Give it a little tug and it will then act like a regular woolly bugger. I use orange thread, ginger marabou tail, ginger hackle (microbarb or short barbed like dry fly) and micro chenille in golden brown (if I could find ginger chenille, I'd use it). I've begun to use a "black" or smoke colored tungsten bead in 5/64. With tungsten it will sink as soon as it hit the water. This should be easy to tie if you can tie a woolly booger, if not; you need to take our classes. Let it swing, the strip and hang on.
Good luck with it.
