Flashback Pheasant Tail Nymph
HOOK: Size 12-16 Wet fly
THREAD: Black
TAIL: Cock pheasantTail fibers
WEIGHT: 8 turns .015 wire
RIB: Fine copper wire
BODY: Cock pheasant tail fibers
WING: Flat pearl
CASE: Tinsel
THORAX: Peacock herl
-
Remove barb from hook. Run the tying thread on at the eye and carry it down to the bend in close turns. At a point opposite the hook barb, catch in five or six fibers of cock pheasant tail allowing their tips to form the tail.
-
With the tips of the pheasant tail fibers projecting back past the hook bend, take 2 inches of fine copper wire and catch it in at the same point.
-
Carry the tying thread two-thirds of the way back up the shank, using the turns to fix the waste end of the wire along the shank. Take hold of the fibers and make a single wrap close to the tail base.
-
Don’t twist the pheasant tail fibers but allow them to spread flat as they are wound. The result is an even body with a slight taper.
-
Once the turns of pheasant tail have covered two-thirds of the hook’s length, secure the loose ends with turns of thread.
-
Secure the end of the wire and remove the excess and that of the pheasant tail fibers. That done, catch in a strip of wide pearl tinsel plus two strands of peacock herl just in front of the body.
-
Take the tying thread up to the eye, then, holding the ends of the peacock herls, wind them without twisting to form the thorax.
-
Secure and remove the ends of the peacock herls before drawing the pearl tinsel over the back of the thorax. Secure that, too, at the eye and remove the excess. Build a neat head and cast off with a whip finish.
