2010 Caddis Fly Swap
Leggy Deer Hair Caddis
Materials:
Hook: Dry 12-18
Thread: Dark Brown
Rib: Small wire-amber
Legs: one set cock pheasant tail fibers, double knotted/Set of legs provided
Body: Superfine waterproof dubbing (brown & black)
Wings: Fine natural deer hair
Hackle: Brown
STEPS
1. Remove hook barb. Wrap thread from eye to hook bend.
2. Amber wire to hook-extend 3-4 wraps beyond thread hook base.
3. Dub brown to middle of hook and end with 3-4 extra wraps for collar.
4. Apply 4-5 wraps of amber ribbing, secure and cut ribbing.
5.Place leg knot slightly forward of hook with leg down and secure. Adjust legs as necessary. Cross wrap legs with black dubbing. Snip off protruding upper leg portions.
6. Bend each leg to side of hook, apply wraps to secure leg with pressure against collar ( black dubbing).
7.Apply Zapp cement to top front hook of hook. When “tacky” apply deer hair, 4-5 wraps and whip finish. Pressure thread to slightly flair hair. Apply cement to knot area.
8. Tie in hackle 3-4 turns.
9. Weave thread 2-3 times around hackle--last turn ends behind eye. Use 1/8 to 1/4 length of a drinking straw, cut length, run up the thread and over hackle to expose a “clean” whip and cement finish.
This is a good fly and one I consider among the “fish magnets. Can be fished wet, or dry. A must for backwater, lakes, ponds at any water temperature.
