I get bored very quickly, so the thought of tying the same fly 100 times is not a possibility. I also can't leave any pattern the same. I have to look at it and see what I can do to improve the shape, color, or additions of rubber legs and so forth.
One day I was working with swimming nymph hooks. These hooks have the shaft bent upwards to make it look like it's swimming. I set several of these hooks on my desk and started to tie a fly. When I looked down at the hooks, I found to my surprise that two where inverted with the points and eyes touching forming a heart.
The idea of the sweetheart bug was born.
