2010 Caddis Fly Swap
Rhyacophila Caddis Emerger
Recipe
Hook: Tiemco 2457, Dai-Riki 135 or equivalent
Bead: Gold Tungsten or Cyclops
Weight (optional): .010” Lead or .015” Non-Lead
Thread: Black 6/0 or 8/0
Rib: Wire (color to suit)
Abdomen: Green, Olive, Brown, or Tan Antron or Haretron dubbing
Thorax: Black Haretron or Charcoal Gray Antron dubbing
Legs: Partridge
Tying Instructions:
1. De-barb hook and slide bead onto hook right behind eye.
2. Starting behind bead, lay down a thread base to about halfway down the bend of the
hook.
3. (Optional) Wrap about 4-5 turns of lead wire around middle of hook shank. Secure
with tying thread.
4. Position thread at rear of lead wire. Tie in rib and secure to end of thread base at
middle of hook bend.
5. Apply dubbing for abdomen to thread using the twist-on technique and wrap to about
the front of the lead weight (dubbing should cover about 2/3 of the hook shank).
6. Apply thorax dubbing in front of abdomen using the twist-on technique. Leave about
1/8” between end of thorax and bead).
7. Take a partridge feather and strip off all of the lower fibrous barbules. Cut the center
stem down from the tip about the length of the finished legs (1/8” to 3/16”). Tie in the
trimmed feather at the bottom of the “V” in front of the thorax on top of the hook. Trim
off the excess stem.
8. Place a couple of additional wraps of dubbing between the legs and the bead to
finish off the thorax.
9. Whip finish.
Fishing Suggestions
This fly imitates the stage of the caddisfly where it has released from the bottom and is struggling to reach the surface. You may use a strike indicator and fish it off of the bottom. At the end of the dead drift, the fly will rise and this is where I get most of my takes. Don’t retrieve at the end of the drift! Let it hang in the current for a few seconds, then retrieve.
